A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF MRS. MARY IDA STEVENS AND EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY UPON HER PASSING.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Mary Ida Lee Stevens, a lifelong resident of Carroll County, departed this life on January 14, 1999, causing a great loss to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Carrollton Public Schools at the age of sixteen, Mrs. Stevens attended Mississippi State College for Women, where she received a bachelor's degree in English and minored in French; and

WHEREAS, following graduation, Mrs. Stevens began her 40-year teaching career at J.Z. George High School as an English teacher; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Stevens is remembered by her students as a teacher with a perfect blend of firmness and affection, tempered with Southern graciousness; and

WHEREAS, faithfully committed to the North Carrollton United Methodist Church since 1937, Mrs. Stevens was actively involved as a Sunday School teacher, a Bible school teacher, a member of United Methodist Women, a member of the choir and the church's organist; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her activities at church, Mrs. Stevens was also a member of the Carroll County Garden Club, the Matinee Musicale and Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society of female teachers; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Stevens is survived by her three children, Joseph Robert "Jody" Stevens III, William Lee "Buck" Stevens and Betty Stevens Turnipseed, and six grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and pay special tribute to such outstanding educators as Mrs. Mary Ida Lee Stevens, who dedicated her life to touching the lives of her students:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Mrs. Mary Ida Lee Stevens and express our deepest sympathy to her family upon her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Mary Ida Lee Stevens and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
